Feedforward a Mindset

Updated: Jul 28

Fragemann (2025) notes that feedforward, a concept created by Marshall Goldsmith, is a communication process that empowers us with future-oriented solutions. It's not just about improving, but about seizing opportunities and shaping our future. This shift in mindset from the traditional feedback model is significant. Instead of dwelling on past mistakes, feedforward offers constructive suggestions for future improvement, instilling a sense of confidence and empowerment.

As a leader with a growth mindset, I recognize that my role extends beyond managing tasks to shaping a culture of growth and learning. I’m prepared for challenges, open to continuous learning, and eager to learn from others. Leadership, to me, is about inspiring collaboration, learning, and innovation. People are the focus of my leadership; therefore, I strive to lead with humility and integrity. I understand that I may not know all the answers, but I am confident that I will be able to guide my team by seeking answers and listening to others' ideas. A leader who embraces a growth mindset has the power to create a culture where it's safe to take risks, learn from mistakes, and evolve as we move ahead.

As an educator, I will use feedforward to provide students with guidance and suggestions as they work to complete a project or assignment. This approach, as recommended by Childhood Education Zone (2025), is not just about pointing out mistakes but about offering support and encouragement. Various forms of feedforward, such as verbal advice, written recommendations, and a structured checklist, create an environment where students feel supported and are better equipped to succeed.

Feedforward blends well with the adaptive leadership style. As an adaptive leader, I am dedicated to helping individuals adapt to change and overcome challenges. Feedforward helps me focus on future-oriented solutions, celebrating small victories, welcoming the collaboration of ideas, and providing mentoring along the way to reach our shared goal.

Feedforward is a mindset. It shifts the focus from judgment to potential. As I continue to grow as a leader, I will use feedforward not just as a strategy, but as a philosophy that helps everyone around me—including myself—move forward with purpose and confidence.
